| Issue: # 12 | April 21, 2010 | |
This week marks the 40th anniversary of the official Earth Day campaign. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, and was designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.
We alone cannot save the Earth, but we are called to help in God's ongoing saving work in the world. Our task is to learn to reshape our lives to honor rather than destroy God's creation.
"The Holy God took the human one and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it." ...Genesis 2:15 |
| MISSION TRIP PLANNED |
|
The Mission Team of Foothills Presbytery is planning another work trip to Houma, Louisiana, June 20-26. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the gulf coast due to recent damaging hurricanes. People continue to live in homes that are in need of repair - or some homes are not livable because the owners cannot afford to fix them. THEY STILL NEED OUR HELP! If you are willing to join this team and travel to Louisiana to work, please download the application form, complete it and send it in to Mary Morrison at the presbytery office. Mary Kathleen Duncan, a candidate under care of Foothills Presbytery, will be leading the team. For questions, please contact her at marykathleen4cu@gmail.com or 864-221-6176. The deadline for sign-ups is May 10. |

GROWING CHRIST'S CHURCH DEEP AND WIDE
Congregations around the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are engaged in innovative outreach programs in order to "Grow Christ's Church Deep and Wide" - a churchwide emphasis adopted by the 218th General Assembly (2008) to help congregations grow through evangelism, discipleship, servanthood and diversity.
Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Greer Church
Greer First Presbyterian Church began a Prayer Shawl Ministry in July of 2009. To date 53 prayer shawls and lap robes have been distributed to church members facing difficult surgery, life threatening illness and long convalescence. As an outreach of this ministry 110 preemie hats and 39 adult and children's hats have been donated to Greenville Memorial for premature babies and individuals facing cancer treatment. The Greer Stitchery Group at the church is also teaching knitting and crocheting to individuals wishing to learn.
(We would love to hear what is happening in your church as we all work together to Grow Christ's Church Deep and Wide.)

| A CALL FOR COMPASSION | |
Mental Health America of Greenville County will present " A Call for Compassion: Pain in the Pews" on Thursday, May 20, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2619 Augusta Street in Greenville. This conference seeks to bridge the gap in understanding and responding to the needs of those dealing with mental health problems. By shattering the stigma surrounding mental illness and opening the doors to those in need, faith communities can become both a rock and a bridge to hope. Through love and acceptance lives can be saved. And at the end of the day isn't that what it's all about? Registration begins at 8:30, and the 9:30 keynote address will be given by the Rev. Steve Vance, Interim Associate Pastor at Fourth Presbyterian Church. The cost is $25 and includes lunch and CEU credit. To register visit the website www.mhagc.org, complete a registration form and send it in. |

Linking for Ministry is an event for smaller membership congregations interested in learning about cooperative ministry (clustering) for the purpose of ministry and mission. It will be held June 2-4 on the campus of Thornwell Home in Clinton. It is hosted by the Laurens County Cluster of Smaller Membership Churches. This 3-day conference is designed to excite, encourage and empower small churches toward new possibilties and opportunities - revitalizing, enlarging and expanding their capacity for worship, work and witness. | LOVING OUR NEIGHBOR
Loving our Neighbor: A Thoughtful Approach to Helping People in Poverty, written by the Rev. Beth Templeton, is an effective resource for people who want to know the best way to help those in need. Presbyterian Outlook writes: "This practical and comprehensive guide is a vital resource for church leaders, mission committees, ministry teams, and study groups who want not only to explore why we are called in our ministry as Christians to reach out in love to our neighbors in poverty, but also to accomplish it in such a way that is respectful and compassionate to those whom we serve." Greenville Magazine says: "Templeton says that when people doubt they're doing the right thing, they often end up doing nothing. This book provides logical and practical answers - along with some food for thought - on the ins and outs of charitable giving." You're invited to visit the website www.lovingourneighborbook.com to learn more about this very important resource. |

| SEEDS OF HOPE | | | It is rainy season in Haiti. While that sometimes creates terrible challenges for those whose homes were destroyed in the earthquake. It is also good news. The rainy season is the growing season. And, for thousands of farmers, it is both an opportunity for economic recovery and a chance for them to play an important role in their country's healing process. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is partnering with the Presbyterian Hunger Program to provide funds and staff support for seeds of hope for Haiti. PDA has committed $500,000 to purchase seeds and tools for farmers who are trying to feed the hundreds of thousands of displaced Haitians who have left Port-au-Prince, as well as the communities that are hosting the displaced. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the Presbyterian Hunger Program are ministries of the PC(USA), which comprises more than 2 million members in more than 10,000 congregations, answering Christ's call to mission and ministry through the U.S. and the world. |
