Issue: # 14May 11, 2010
birth2010In 1922, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Women's Auxiliary (PCUS), it was decided that an offering should be made for a definite cause. That same year, Hallie Paxson Winnsborough, superintendent of women's work, visited Miss Dowd's School for Girls in Kochi, Japan. Realizing the school's needs, she challenged members of the Women's Auxiliary to give one penny for each year of their life as a birthday gift to the school. Over the years, that tradition has become known as the Birthday Offering. Presbyterian Women have given more than $29 million in support of mission projects through the world. The Birthday Offering is collected in the spring of each year and funds up to five projects that are not included in ongoing General Assembly mission support, such as agricultural development, child care, community organization, criminal justice, drug counseling, economic justice, elderly care, employment training, homelessness, literacy, violence and women's concerns.

GROWING CHRIST'S CHURCH DEEP AND WIDE

Congregations around the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are engaged in innovative outreach programs in order to "Grow Christ's Church Deep and Wide" - a churchwide emphasis adopted by the 218th General Assembly (2008) to help congregations grow through evangelism, discipleship, servanthood and diversity.

Volunteer Village in Austell, Georgia
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is setting up a Volunteer Village in Austell, Georgia, to host the volunteers coming to assist the homeowners in the Atlanta area who were flooded in the storm last fall.

The Presbyterians are partnering with the United Methodists to provide work for the volunteers, but right now the bookings for the village are few. If you are considering a mission trip in the next few months, Austell would be a great site. If you have not considered a mission trip, this would be a good opportunity to plan one. A team is three or more and any group, church, temple, mosque or club, etc. can book a trip. If you are interested or would like to talk with someone about this, contact the PDA call center which books all teams at 866-732-6162.
LITURGICAL SCULPTURE AND FURNITURE

lecturn
Sculptor Ken Christy has been creating liturgical sculpture and furniture from wood since 1979. His designs usually have simple, graceful forms which allow the elegance of line and pleasing proportions to serve as the primary decoration. He takes special pride and joy from designing unique furnishings in which the client has an active participation in the design process, so that the final product will be as much a reflection of their tastes, needs, and aesthetic values as his own. He has a commitment to high quality and prefers to work with domestic hardwoods, leaving the final finish as natural as is practical. For more information visit the website www.fine-wood-furniture.net or email him at kenchristy@intergate.com. Samples of Ken's work are on display at the presbytery office.
COLUMBIA'S S3 PROJECT
Group project applications are being accepted through September 30 for participation in Columbia Theological Seminary's S3 (Sabbath, Study and Service) Project. S3 offers small, self-selected groups of clergy and other church professionals the opportunity to design and participate in learning projects that strengthen their practice of ministry. Groups will receive $500 per person to fund their self-directed group work. Participants must attend two retreats, one in February 2011 at the beginning of their year-long project and another in February 2012. More information.
LET US REASON TOGETHER
book
Let us Reason Together: Christians and Jews in Conversation
is now available for pre-order from Congregational Ministries Publishing. Edited by Joseph D. Small and Gilbert S. Rosenthal, this book contains remarkable dialogue between representatives of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the National Council of Synagogues. Five years ago 25 rabbis, Presbyterian ministers, and theologians began a series of conversations designed to increase mutual understanding between Christians and Jews. These conversations led to consultations on four issues: theological relationship between Christians and Jews, the Land, evangelism and community identity. Pre-order Let us Reason Together, available now.
