The Will of God: Answering the Hard Questions by James C. Howell
Veteran pastor and theologian James C. Howell considers a number of issues relating to God's will, how it is known, how it is done, and how we respond when bad things happen and we feel God is absent or has turned away from us. In this sensitive presentation, he explores these questions and provides ways of recognizing the true things to which we can hold in the midst of hard times. Howell proceeds simply and practically to consider personal understandings of God, God's will for our lives, and ways in which God's will is lived. He reflects on what to do and believes when bad things happen, "why" they happen, and the quest for God in the midst of it all, recognizing that God's will is for good. Howell provides pastoral and theological help for the issues we face in life, showing us what we can do and how to "believe even more deeply in God, even as we grieve losses, resist evil, and muster hope." Questions for discussion accompany each chapter.---Adapted from book cover.

Fourth Presbyterian Church Receives Award

Increasingly it is local churches that are stepping forward to care for the jobless, the depressed and the hungry and to meet the growing needs of people buffeted by economic uncertainty. But as the number of seminary students interested in congregational ministry dwindles, the nations' congregations are asking, "Who will lead our churches tomorrow?"

Preparing for the ministry today is a costly calling. Rising student debt, an economy in turmoil, unsure job prospects and modest salaries have combined to cause many candidates to question if becoming a pastor - however deep the calling - carries too high a price.

To help develop a new generation of gifted young leaders for local congregations across denominations, The Fund for Theological Education is awarding nearly $90,000 in "Cultures of Call" grants. Selected from applicants nationwide, eight congregations, representing seven different denominations will each receive funding for innovative local programs to be implemented over the next 18 months. FTE launched the grant program with funding from Lilly Endowment, and these grants will enable congregations to move further into their role as nurturers of the next generation of leaders - identifying talented and faithful young people who aspire to serve others and to explore the call to ministry.

Fourth Presbyterian Church of Greenville was awarded $11,000 for their "Called Fourth" initiative to honor vocational listening through exploration of seven "callings" grounded in Biblical reflection and as experienced in the lives of the church's members. Scripture study, story-telling, mentoring and mission service around the seven callings is the program's structure.
