What Can I Do?

Two stories from Presbyterian News Service captured my attention this week. First was the literacy program for inmates run by a small community church in Crestline, Calif. In a Corrections facility that housed nonviolent inmates nearing the end of what may have been lengthy prison sentences, five members of this small church took on a surprising project. Their feeling was "Sometimes people make bad choices because they don't have the life skills and knowledge that they need to do the right things." So once a week these church members meet with the men to help with reading skills, written language skills and math skills - helping to prepare the inmates to be better equipped to enter society.

 jar
Another story was about "The Giving Jar." A young third grader, Nathan Hogue, was very interested in a glass coin jar sitting on a teacher's desk and watched it as the level of coins rose. He knew the money collected in "The Giving Jar" was going to help people on the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Nathan participated in a fundraiser at the school and raised $13 for PDA by collecting and recycling aluminum cans.

Good News to Share
 nazareth
Nazareth Church in Moore has good news to share. This past Sunday they re-dedicated their Family Life Center and celebrated the complete re-modeling of the building, which includes new meeting rooms, expanded and modernized kitchen, new gym floor, enhanced youth rooms and safety features. Sunday's gathering included a lunch of low country boil for everyone.
This celebration was a time to give thanks to God for all of His blessings.
