 pdq        Weather Radios

Does your church have a weather radio?
Church offices and church day care facilities and preschools usually don't have a TV or radio on during working hours. How are they warned of possible dangerous weather or other events? A good weather radio is inexpensive, and you can purchase models that only come on when there is a warning for your area. NOAA weather radios now broadcast warnings and post-event information for all types of hazards, including natural (earthquakes, avalanches, etc.), environmental (chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (AMBER alerts, 911, terrorism, etc.). The Presbytery's ICE (In Case of Emergency) Team asks that you consider investing in a NOAA Weather Radio. For more information, visit www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/.

ICE also would like to say "thank you" to all of the churches responding to our appeal for possible shelters for evacuees from the lower part of the state during the recent hurricanes. Fortunately, evacuation to our area was not necessary, but your willingness to help is appreciated. Your contact information will be kept on file for future needs. Thank you.
Montreat Has New President

peeryThe Rev. Albert G. "Pete" Peery has been called to be the new President of Montreat Conference Center. Peery has served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Asheville for the past 14 years, and he and his wife have a long-term relationship with Montreat.

Montreat Conference Center serves over 35,000 people annually who venture to the mountains of western North Carolina for conferences, retreats, clergy renewal, sabbatical study, and other events. The conference center's mission is one of strengthening churches, building relationships, and growing disciples in the name of Jesus Christ.
Fundraising Dinner

girl

On September 20 at 7 pm the Eastminster Church will be hosting a fundraising dinner for Rusul Jalal, a little girl from Iraq whose right foot was disfigured by a U.S. missile attack in 2006. Doctors at Greenville Shriner's Hospital amputated Rusul's foot earlier this summer, and she recently received a prosthetic leg. Her sister, Salee, who lost both of her legs in the same attack, received prosthetic legs at Greenville Shriner's Hospital through the No More Victims program last year. Additional funds are needed to cover the costs of bringing Rusul to this country, and the Outreach Team at Eastminster Church has responded to this call for help. The church is hosting a pledge dinner event, and folks in all congregations are invited and encouraged to attend. The dinner will be catered by Pita House. There is no charge, but a donation in the range of $50 per couple or more would be greatly appreciated. All proceeds will go directly to the costs involved in bringing Rusul here for the surgery. Rusul and her father will be the honored guests at the dinner. Child care will be provided, but please call and RSVP to Jill McLeigh at 238-0187 or mcleigh@clemson.edu by Sept. 15.

United Ministries sponsors "Walk for the Homeless"
benefiting PLACE OF HOPE - a Day Shelter

hope
The Place of Hope is a day shelter in downtown Greenville serving the community's homeless. It is a trusted refuge that they depend on - where they take a shower, brush their teeth, use the restroom, wash their clothes, use the phone and receive mail.

Another vital service the Place of Hope provides is one-on-one counseling with a case manager.

The goal of Walk for the Homeless is to have 2,000 walkers and to raise $200,000. Ask family and friends for pledges and collect needed supplies for the shelter. In 2007 over 600 people visited the Place of Hope more than 15,000 times to receive hygiene and communication services.

Items needed include spray deodorant, soap, toothbrushes & toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, socks, towels/wash cloths.
