Smaller Church Pastors Gather

Every two months pastors in smaller churches in the presbytery get together at the office to share ideas and to enjoy a program providing information helpful to smaller congregations. This week Ron Krabbe, Elder at Seneca Church and computer expert, talked about how to create and maintain a website that would be most beneficial and cost-saving to the smaller church. These meetings are well attended and enjoyed by those who are there.

NEW HYMN WRITTEN FOR CROP WALK
Presbyterian hymn writer Carolyn Winfrey Gillette has penned a new hymn for CROP Walk participants entitled "O God, You Send Us Out to Walk." Presbyterians have long been among the most active participants in the annual CROP walks around the country, and this hymn lifts up the needs of survivors of a number of recent natural disasters. The words for the hymn are posted on the CWS website.

Special Offering for Thornwell

turkey
At Thanksgiving every year many churches receive a special offering for Thornwell Home for Children. These cardboard turkeys have been used by children saving their coins for Thornwell for many years. This money will be used for funding the needs of the children and the many programs that support and nurture them. Click here for the story of the "cardboard turkey." For information and bulletin inserts, click hereNEWS FROM THORNWELL: Right now 92 children, youth and college-age young adults are enrolled at Thornwell. Six college students are away at school, with five pursuing two-year degrees in the Clinton area. Ten new persons have been admitted recently, so please keep these children and their Family Teachers in your prayers.
Resource of the Week

book
Long, Thomas G. Accompany them with singing: the Christian funeral. Westminster John Knox Press, c2009.
Long provides a theological and cultural critique of today's Christian funeral. He begins by describing how the Christian funeral developed historically, theologically, and liturgically, and then discusses recent cultural trends in funeral practices, including the rise in both cremations and memorial services. He describes the basic pattern for a funeral service, details options in funeral planning, identifies characteristics of a "good funeral," and provides thoughtful guidance for preaching at a funeral.
