Board of Pensions Benefits Overview

sealWhat are my benefits with the Board of Pensions? How does the Medical Plan work? How much money does it cost me? Will I really get a pension when I retire? How is it calculated?

These questions and many more will be answered at a BENEFITS OVERVIEW of the BOARD OF PENSIONS of the PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA). This gathering will be held on Wednesday, February 20, at 12:00 noon at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Road, Greenville, S.C. Lunch is provided (free), but you must reserve a spot. Call Sandy Sharpe at 288- 5574 to make your reservation. Plan members and their spouses are encouraged to attend. Clark Simmons, our regional representative, will lead the overview.

Recently Added to the Resource Center

filmHearing a Film, Seeing a Sermon: Preaching and Popular Movies by Timothy B. Cargal
Pastors are constantly in search of ways to connect to their parishioners through their sermons, and one of the most effective ways to do this is through the use of contemporary movies. New to our Resource Center is this book that teaches pastors some basics of interpreting films so that they can integrate insights about popular films into their preaching.
This book and many others are available in the presbytery office resource center. For detailed instructions on how you can search the Foothills Presbytery Resource Center catalog online, click below.

Joys and Concerns

kevinThe Outdoor Ministries Board of Foothills and Trinity Presbyteries is very excited and pleased to announce that the Rev. Kevin Cartee has been called to be the new Outdoor Ministries Director for Camp Buc and Camp Fellowship. Kevin is currently Associate Pastor at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia and will assume his new duties in February. We welcome him to this new position and look forward to working with him. Further details about how to contact Kevin will be available soon.

We rejoice also with Jonathan Sherrod, our past Outdoor Ministries Director, on his call to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Henderson, N.C.

Our condolences are expressed to the family of the late Rev. Joe Wagner. Rev. Wagner passed away in early January. He was a resident of Spartanburg and is survived by his wife Margaret.

Ghana Pastoral Mission Trip

ghana

Are you interested in inter-national exchanges? Do you think people of other cultures are fascinating? Would you like to share your Christian faith with people from other countries? If you answered yes to these questions, you might be interested in participating in the upcoming trip to Ghana, West Africa.

In 1985 the Presbytery of the Piedmont, now Foothills Presbytery, entered into a partnership agreement with Kwahu Presbytery in Ghana to provide financial aid for medical services through Donkorkrom Clinic, which was later upgraded to a small hospital. The Partnership also acts as a conduit to allow Christians from both cultures the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the world church. Now the Partnership has expanded its reach beyond the hospital to more programs of evangelism and education, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to more Ghanaians.

Every other year we visit our partners in Ghana, and in alternate years we host visitors from Ghana. This past fall we welcomed Mary, Alex, Seth and Emmanuel from Ghana, and they spoke throughout the presbytery about the Presbyterian Church in Ghana. Mary spoke about the work of the Presbyterian Women and brought jewelry that they had made to sell here. The money from the jewelry supports the work of the Presbyterian Women.

In September of this year twelve people from Foothills Presbytery will travel to Ghana to visit with the folks in Kwahu Presbytery. The dates of the trip are September 26 through October 10, and the approximate cost is $2,000. If you are interested in being a part of this mission trip, click below to download an application form. The deadline for returning applications with a $250 deposit is March 1, 2008. If you have questions about the trip, you may call the presbytery office.
