Thanks Spartanburg PSA!
|

|

John
DuBose, Wofford freshman and the new Spartanburg PSA co-moderator from
Easley Presbyterian Church, is pictured working on one of the Presbytery
office benches. These two benches are kept in front of the office and
were in need of some repair. Dottie Metropol, Spartanburg PSA Campus
Minister, picked up the benches from the presbytery office, and the
students in the campus ministry program are refinishing them. This is
part of a program they have called "Random Acts of Kindness."
The PSA is spending every Thursday afternoon for an entire semester doing
projects for non-profits and helping people and organizations who do not
receive as much attention as larger organizations. The presbytery office
is very grateful for the work these students are doing and we are excited
and happy about getting two "refurbished" benches back. Our
office front entrance will look so much better! Thank you.

Summer Youth Institute
|
|

|
|
(Pictured above are some
of the youth who attended the recent Senior High Retreat at Montreat.)
Foothills Presbytery Youth Council plans for events such as this one.
This Council is composed of 20 young people and several adults chosen
from various churches throughout the presbytery. They are responsible for
planning, promoting and implementing a program of youth ministry for all
Middle School and Senior High School youth and their advisors in the
churches of the presbytery. This ministry involves two weekend retreats
and two one-day events held every year. All churches are encouraged to
promote these events with their young people. The PYC also plans and
implements a one-day event that provides leadership development for youth
and advisors. Donna Templeton is the part- time presbytery staff person
who works with the PYC. The Senior High Retreat held recently had a
record registration of 130 people.
On April 20 from 3:00 until 5:30 the Foothills PYC will sponsor a Middle
School Shindig at Easley Presbyterian Church. The theme for this Shindig
is "Mission Possible" and will be centered around youth being
involved in Mission in the church. Activities will include group discussions,
worship, and participation in mission projects. Click below to see the
flyer announcing this shindig.
Do you minister with
young people who like to ask big questions of faith? Do they ever wonder
if God is a good God, why bad things happen? Do they wonder how we are
called to respond to the world around us in regard to medical ethics,
eco-stewardship, poverty....you name it? If you have youth who are
finishing 11th or 12th grade and have questions such as these, check out
the Summer Youth Institute at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. This
Institute is a two-week program that is academic in nature and will
engage participants in advanced levels of study in areas such as church
history, ethics, biblical studies and education.
Since 1997, the Summer
Youth Institute has drawn rising high school seniors from all over the
country who come to ask deep questions about life and faith, to think
critically about these issues, and to explore ministry from the pulpit
and the pews. The Summer Institute runs July 5-19 and thanks to the Lilly
Endowment and friends of the Seminary, each student receives a full
scholarship that covers room, board, and tuition. Students are
responsible for their own travel expenses. For more information and to
download an application, go to www.summeryouthinstitute.org.
The deadline for early registration is very soon. If you are interested,
application should be made as soon as possible.
