| Presbytery Mission Team Completes Job |
 |
|
The group of 14 volunteers from various churches and the
office staff in the presbytery completed their assigned job in
New Orleans this week. They all worked in a rather large home
(3,000 sq. ft.) virtually gutting the building and securing it
until the next work team can come in and treat for mold and
mildew. The home will then be ready for reconstruction. The
family who lived in this particular house evacuated during
Katrina to Houston but is now back living in New Orleans in a
rental home. They feel truly blessed to have church groups
giving their time and expertise to make it possible for them
to eventually return to their home.

| Middle School Retreat in October at
Bonclarken |
 |
|
Our very own George Wilkes will team up with our PYC and
keynote this retreat. We are pretty sure there will be a
fishing story or two in the keynote because George isn't just
our beloved Executive Presbyter . . . he is quite the
fisherman (or so he says). George is a graduate of
Presbyterian College and Union Seminary. He even was the
pastor of St. Giles Presbyterian Church in Greenville once
long ago! Joining George will be Scott Brown leading us in
music. Scott is a graduate of Presbyterian College and has
been a Youth Director in St. Augustine, Florida, and is now
the Director of Senior High Youth Ministry at First
Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC.
The theme for this Middle School Retreat is "Peace by
Piece." We live in a world where at times it is hard to figure
out where we "fit in." Sometimes we find our place just fine
but at other times, we don't and life seems to fall to pieces.
Each one of us is always looking to find where "my piece"
fits. At this retreat, we will look at Jesus Christ, the
Prince of Peace, and how His peace assures us that God is
always with us, working to help us know the peace that matters
in the midst of life's wildness.
Please visit the Foothills Presbytery website to download a
brochure and registration form for this retreat. You may also
contact Sabra at the presbytery office to get information
about the retreat. Registration deadline is October 2.

Caring for the Congregation by Lay
Leaders |
|
|
|
The PACE subcommittee of Foothills Presbytery offers
courses that give non-ordained church staff people and lay
people opportunities to participate in quality courses that
will benefit their ministries in several ways.
The fall
course entitled "Caring for the Congregation - Pastoral
Care for Lay Leaders" will provide an overview in the
discipline of pastoral care in a congregational
setting. The objectives of the course for participants
are: (1) to encourage a clearer pastoral care identity in
working with church members who need care, (2) to increase
skill in active listening, boundary setting and referral, as
well as their own spiritual formation and self-care, (3) to
familiarize with possible issues in the congregation and how
to utilize current theological, psychological, and contextual
resources that could assist spiritual leadership and ministry.
This course is currently open for registration. Please help us
publicize this class by including the following announcement
in your weekly bulletin, newsletter or wherever it may be
appropriate for your congregation. If you have specific
questions about PACE or about the course, please contact Mary
Morrison, Associate for Education at Foothills Presbytery.
Bulletin Announcement:
Looking to grow the pastoral
care ministry beyond the pastor to other key leaders in the
church? The PACE subcommittee of Foothills Presbytery is
offering a Pastoral Care course geared for Christian
educators, youth directors, church musicians, Stephen
ministers, church officers, and others who may be called upon
to care for others in the congregation. The course meets
Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (with bring your own
dinner at 6:00 p.m.) at the presbytery office from September
