Study and Think Group Second Meeting

sealThe second meeting of those who are interested in studying and discussing the proposed Form of Government will take place this coming Wednesday, October 17, from noon until 2:00 at Nazareth Presbyterian Church in Moore. All are welcome. Please contact David Sutton at davidsutton@charterinternet.com if you plan to attend and would like a deli sandwich for lunch.



Theology Weekend

First SptbgFirst Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg invites members of Foothills Presbytery to join them in a Theology Weekend with guest theologian and preacher, the Rev. Dr. Andrew Purves, Professor of Pastoral Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The schedule of events is:
Saturday, October 27 - 10:30-1:45 - Seminar and Lunch - "What's in a Name?"
Reformation Sunday, October 28: Adult Sunday School Class at 9:45 - "Reflections on Cancer, Illness and Faith in God" - 8:45 and 11:00 Worship Service with Kirking of the Tartans: Dr. Purves preaching "The Joy of Faith" - 12:15 Church- wide Covered Dish Lunch (Bring a dish for eight to share.)
Monday, October 29: 9:00 - 11:00 am - Roundtable discussion for Foothills Presbytery clergy and educators.



A Day at Grace Community Festival

Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Mauldin invites everyone to join in the fun as they celebrate the blessings of autumn on Saturday, October 27, during their Day at Grace Community Festival. The activities begin at 8:00 a.m. and go until 1:00 p.m. They will include a fantastic children's play area, an amazing antique tractor show, a giant yard sale, and delicious barbeque for sale by the plate for $4 or by the pound for $5.

Admission is free. Grace Covenant is located at 739 North Main Street in Mauldin across from the C.F. Sauer (Duke's Mayonnaise) company. They hope to see you there!

The Thoughtful Christian subscription is reduced for small churches! While many small churches are buying study packs for groups, there is an abundance on the site now for pastors to read for sermon preparation and for others to read outside a formal class setting. A subscription gives you access for up to five users in your church, with their own username and password, unlimited downloads of all studies, all essays in the Reading Room, access to the new studies for youth coming this February You may send or print out all studies and essays for absolutely every member of your church, but you may not share them outside your church membership. Supplies to the Gulf Coast

The Red Cross is looking for a group that is planning a trip to the Gulf Coast in the near future. They have school supplies that need to be delivered to that area. The shipment includes 8 large Rubbermaid containers and 3 large trash bags. If your church is planning a trip or if you know of a work team going that way, please contact Tanya Carter at 864-271-8222 or cartert@usa.redcross.org.



Heritage Lecturer at Westminster Greenville Church

levineWestminster Greenville Church will welcome Dr. Amy-Jill Levine as Heritage Lecturer on Sunday, November 4. Dr. Levine is Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School, where she is also director of the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender and Sexuality. An engaging speaker with a sharp wit, Dr. Levine is an Orthodox Jewish New Testament scholar who describes herself as "a Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Protestant divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt." Dr. Levine will speak at the 9:00 and 11:15 morning worship services. The church is located at 2310 Augusta Street. Members of both Temple of Israel and Beth Israel Synagogue will be Westminster's guests for an ecumenical gathering on Sunday evening. Dr. Levine will speak also at Furman University the evening of November 5 in Daniel Chapel. The events are open to the public.



Joys and Concerns

leavesPlease pray for Jack Taylor and Richard Gibbons who are both recovering from surgery. Jack is the interim pastor at Providence Church in Powdersville and Richard is pastor at First Greenville. Please also keep in your prayers Frank Norris, CLP at Varennes Church, who will have surgery next week.

Congratulations to Mary and Bill Gause who welcomed a new baby into the world on October 8. Harrison "Harry" McCall Gause weighed 8 lbs., 15 oz. and was 21 inches long. Mother, baby, father and little brother, Will Gray, are all doing well. Mary is Associate Pastor at Fort Hill Church and Bill is Clemson Campus Minister.

"A Day Set Apart"

Hospice of the Upstate is offering "A Day Set Apart" to learn more about the curriculum for Living Till We Die: A Journey of Faith Practices on Saturday, October 27 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Hospice of the Upstate Sadler Bereavement and Education Center, 1835 Rogers Road in Anderson, S.C.

This seminar is for pastors, chaplains, social workers, church Christian educators and leaders, Sunday School teachers, Stephen ministers, and congregational health ministry leaders. The seminar will introduce the curriculum that includes a study guide, tips for leaders, songbook/CD, and resources.

Dr. Kathleen Deignan, Founder and Director of the Iona Spirituality Institute, Iona College (NY) and sacred songwriter will lead this "day set apart" through worship, song, and spiritual practices that will invite us to embrace life more fully. Sr. Kathleen is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Iona College and author of several books. A recent book, When the Trees Say Nothing: Writings on Nature, is the first collection of Thomas Merton's writings on nature (Sorin Books 2003). Nancy Blakely, Chaplain at Hospice of the Upstate, and Elizabeth Robinson, harpist/accompanist, will join Sr. Kathleen in leading the day's activities.

The first 50 registrants will receive a complimentary copy of the study guide, together with the Living Till We Die songbook and CD.
