Many Thanks and Godspeed to Sabra Smith

Foothills
Presbytery is saddened by the recent news that our office administrative
assistant, Sabra Smith, is retiring at the end of this year. Sabra has
worked at the presbytery office for twelve years and will be missed not
only by the staff but by many people throughout the presbytery. Sabra has
been the helpful voice to parents registering their children for Camp
Buc, working with them to find just the right session. She has been the person
people contacted when they were looking for a particular resource in the
library. She has worked with the Youth Council and the Older Adult
Committee handling retreat registrations. She's made many, many name
tags!! Sabra is just a fun person and has brought joy and laughter to the
presbytery office, along with being a dedicated, hard worker. We will
miss you so much, Sabra!

Presbyterian
Disaster Assistance enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring
for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic events. PDA
is the emergency and refugee program of the PC (USA) and is funded
through One Great Hour of Sharing.
Beginning the night of
Oct. 20, unusually fierce Santa Ana winds stoked fires that quickly burst
into uncontrolled life throughout southern California's dry, hot
landscape. By midweek, more than 20 separate blazes formed pockets of
fire raging from the Simi Valley northwest of Los Angeles, through San
Diego County to the Mexican border. The flames consumed more than 500,000
acres, destroyed more than 2,000 houses, forced the temporary evacuation
of nearly one million people, and have been blamed for at least seven
deaths. Area Presbyterian churches quickly came together with the
Presbytery of San Diego, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and local
leaders to coordinate response plans.
Rick Turner, Foothills
Presbytery's own Disaster Response Coordinator, was deployed to the San
Diego area, and is mentioned in the Presbyterian News Service article,
parts of which are written above. To read the entire article, click on

"All That Matters"

All That Matters is a CD done by the Rev. Bryan
McFarland, the Hunger Action Enabler in Salem Presbytery. A review of
this music states: "Bryan Field McFarland's All That Matters sets
a new standard for independent recordings. Strong lyrics, tight
harmonies, catchy melodies, and a solid band lay the groundwork for an
enjoyable ride through a variety of genres, while maintaining the theme
that "God is love, and love is all that matters." Read the
entire review at the link below and purchase the CD at http://cdbaby.com/cd/bfm3.
A portion of proceeds goes to the Presbyterian Hunger Program.

January Seminars at Columbia Seminary
|
|

|
|
Acclaimed author and
preacher Anna Carter Florence will lead "Blurring the Boundaries:
Preaching as Testimony," January 28-30 on the campus of Columbia
Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. Offered through the seminary's
Center for Lifelong Learning, the event will feature a mix of plenary
sessions and workshops facilitated by Carter Florence and a cadre of small-group
leaders.
Carter Florence is
associate professor of preaching and worship at Columbia and author of
the book Preaching as Testimony (Westminster John Knox, 2007). She
says, "Testimony, one of the oldest forms of Christian witness,
contains both a narration of events and a confession of belief. We tell
what we have seen and heard and confess what we believe about it.
Testimony can't be proven true or false, only believed or rejected. It
raises the question, "Does testimony blur the boundaries of what a sermon
is and who may preach it?"
The $225 program fee
includes two meals (Monday dinner and Tuesday lunch). A limited number of
spaces are available for a reduced registration fee of $100 for non-CTS
seminary students currently enrolled in basic ministry degree programs.
Register online for the event and register for housing. Or print,
complete and mail the brochure.
Participants in January
2008 seminars may want to stay an extra day to attend "Preaching in
the Light of the Resurrection: The Lectionary Texts for Eastertide,"
led by New Testament scholar and Columbia professor David Bartlett. This
seminar will focus on the Gospel of John and on 1 Peter and is designed
primarily as preparation for preaching. The seminar begins Thursday
evening, January 31, and concludes at noon, Friday, February 2. For
questions about the program contact Linda Morningstar, MorningstarL@CTSnet.edu
or 404-687-4636; for questions about registration, contact Pat Roper, RoperP@CTSnet.edu
or 404-687-4587.
OTHER COLUMBIA SEMINARY NEWS:
Charles Campbell, minister member of Foothills Presbytery and Peter
Marshall Professor of Homiletics at CTS, is now president of the Academy
of Homiletics. Campbell has taught preaching at Columbia since 1991 and
is the author of several books, most recently, The Word Before the
Powers: An Ethic of Preaching.
