Hunger Task Force Being Formed
|
|

|
|
The
Mission Team of Foothills Presbytery is forming a Hunger Task Force to
oversee the new 2-cents a meal program approved at the February
Presbytery meeting.
The Task Force will make decisions about how to support the
presbytery-wide effort and how to allocate the portion of the 2-cents a
meal offering to be distributed by presbytery. If you have a passion to
fulfill Christ's command to feed the hungry, or know someone in your
congregation who does, please contact Dale Rawlings at 864-225-9950 or dalerev@bellsouth.net.
The Task Force will begin meeting in July. Kickoff for the 2-cents a meal
program will be at the August 21 meeting of Presbytery.

Mission Challenge ' 07
|
|

|
|
Mission
is calling on you! In October 2007 thirty PC (USA) missionaries will go
out into every corner of the United States to share their stories. This
effort will educate the church about how God works in the world and how
we as a denomination participate in God's mission. Mission Challenge ' 07
is the largest event of its kind ever carried out by the Presbyterian
Church (USA).
The PC(USA) has 275 mission personnel in 60 countries
serving terms of two years or longer. Another 80 Young Adult Volunteers
are serving for a year in a community of need in 10 sites in the United
States and 8 international sites. The Presbyterian Church has been a
mission-sending agency for 174 years, beginning work in Africa and India
in 1833 and China in 1837.
Mark Adams from Frontera de Cristo will be our guest at the
August 21 Foothills Presbytery meeting and will challenge every church in
the presbytery to arrange for a missionary to speak in your church and to
prayerfully consider accepting the challenge to support at least one PC(USA)
missionary through prayer, advocacy, and financial support.

JOYS AND CONCERNS

We
rejoice with Westminster Presbyterian Church in Westminster as they plan
for the celebration of their 125th anniversary of the church. The Rev.
Dr. George Harper is pastor, and the congregation worships each week in
the original building with original furnishings. Executive Presbyter
George Wilkes will be the guest speaker for the service on July 22.
Condolences are sent to the family of Dr. William Ramsay,
retired Presbyterian minister and Bible professor, who died May 21 at
Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital after a brief illness. Dr.
Ramsay was a pastor for ten years, served on the staff of the Board of
Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA; was a
Bible and Philosophy professor at King College, and a professor of Bible
at Bethel College. He was a prolific writer and a frequent contributor to
THESE DAYS. Among his writings was the book THE WESTMINSTER GUIDE TO THE
BOOKS OF THE BIBLE.
Please remember the Rev. Dan Youngblood in your prayers. Dan
is a recently retired minister and past presbytery moderator. He was in
the hospital recently and had a pacemaker installed.
Also, keep the Rev. Dr. Jim Fogartie in your prayers. He is in White Oak
Rehabilitation in Spartanburg. Dr. Fogartie retired after serving as
Senior Minister at First Spartanburg Church.

Mediation Skills
Training Institute
|
|

|
|
"The Mediation Skills Training Institute.
. .was `life transforming' for me. . My faith and call to peacemaking
came together . . . My ministry and life will not be the same, and I am
equipped to be `part of the solution' instead of being part of the
problem." This was the sentiment of a pastor/therapist who
participated in Lombard Mennonite Peace Center's (LMPC) Mediation
Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders. Other participants
in the training have had similar responses.
During the week of October 8-12, LMPC will be conducting this dynamic
training event at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia, South Carolina.
The leader of the institute will be Richard Blackburn, LMPC Executive
Director.
The Mediation Skills Training Institute has been described
by participants as being "a great event for developing skills in
working with conflict in the church," as "the best continuing
education event I've attended in all my years of ministry," and as
"well worth your investment of self as well as resources." One
particpant advises, "You must take one week out of your life to do
this!"
The institute focuses on: individual styles of response to conflict;
win-win negotiation skills; skills to mediate conflict between
individuals; and tools to effectively manage congregational conflict. A
component on group consultation and intervention is also included.
Specific attention is given to mediating conflict in the church, though
the skills gained are also helpful in other settings including the home,
the school, and the workplace.
LMPC is committed to the mission of helping the church grow into health
and wholeness, into all that Christ wants the church to be. LMPC pursues
that mission by conducting workshops on biblical peacemaking and conflict
transformation skills and by providing mediation and consultation services
for conflicted churches in addition to offering several Mediation Skills
Training Institutes yearly.
The cost for this five-day institute is $595 if registered by September
10, 2007, and $670 after that date. A registration brochure and other
information may be obtained by writing to: LMPC, 101 W 22nd St., Suite
206, Lombard, IL 60148, or by emailing Admin@LMPeaceCenter.org, or
calling 630- 627-0507. The website for LMPC is given below.
