JOYS AND CONCERNS

(As part of the Joys and Concerns column each week, in addition to sharing happenings in the presbytery, we are providing a rotating list of ministers, educators, and church leaders whose names we would like for you to place on your prayer list.)

Please remember this week in your prayers: Vince Alig, Pastor of Walhalla Church; Margaret Are, Member-at-Large residing in Jacksonville, Florida; David Bailey, Pastor of Central Church in Anderson; and Larry Bates, Interim Associate Pastor at First Spartanburg.

We rejoice with Chuy, Rosario and Susie Gallegos as they travel back to Mexico next week and have an opportunity to visit with family and friends there. We pray for a safe trip for them and look forward to their return to the presbytery Hispanic ministry at John Calvin Church.

Columbia Seminary Online Journal

"New Church, New Century" is the title of the latest issue of Columbia Theological Seminary's free online journal, @ this point: theological investigations in church and culture. According to co-editor, Mark Douglas, this issue addresses movements shaking up "church business-as-usual" with new kinds of worship, mission, evangelism, and community. "Will this be the church of our children and grandchildren? What do our `brick and mortar' churches have in common with these communities? These are questions we're considering in this issue." Douglas says.

Developed with church members in mind and published twice a year, @ this point is free and available only online at the website given below. Each issue focuses on a particular topic from the perspective of a variety of theological disciplines and includes a lead article, response articles, and teaching resources to guide further discussion. All content can be downloaded and reproduced without charge. Readers may also register to receive e-mail announcements of new issues.

Where, O Where, Have Our Minutes Gone?

seal

With the closing of the Presbyterian Historical Center in Montreat at the end of 2006, all of the stored session minutes, membership books and historical artifacts that were being kept at the Department of History/Presbyterian Historical Society were moved this spring to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for safekeeping.

Alternatively, churches can request that these records be safeguarded by one of the nine PCUSA seminaries located in different regions of the United States, thereby keeping them closer geographically to their points of origin. Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, is particularly suited to help in this effort, as it has been approved to develop an innovative and exciting program for the study of Southern Presbyterian history and theology. This new program will allow for the continuation of the long, successful work of preserving the church's archives, but it will also make Presbyterian history and heritage come alive for this and future generations.

For more information about storing your records with CTS, contact Linda Davis, Special Collections Librarian, John Bulow Campbell Library, Columbia Theological Seminary. (Tele. #404-687-4615 or email DavisL@ctsnet.edu.)

Whether they are in Philadelphia or at CTS in Decatur, the records and artifacts remain the property of the local congregation or presbytery which submitted them for safekeeping and will be carefully and professionally cared for. Additionally, they may be requested to be returned at any time upon written authorization by the Clerk of Session. If your congregation is unsure as to what has been confided to the Presbyterian Historical Society, PHS can provide you with a printout listing the records and items currently in their care. To request more information or to request that items be sent to Columbia Theological Seminary, churches can write to Margery Sly, Director and Assistant Stated Clerk, Dept. of History, Office of the General Assembly, 425 Lombard St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19147 (email: msly@history.pcusa.org).
