Campaign Raises $56 Million for
Union-PSCE
|
|

|
|
The One in Mission
campaign, a $50 million effort for Union-PSCE begun in 2001, concluded
June 30 with more than $56 million in commitments to the seminary.
The largest campaign in the seminary's history, and the first since the
federation of Union Theological Seminary and the Presbyterian School of
Christian Education, the One in Mission effort drew support from nearly
6,200 individuals, alumni/ae, churches and foundations.
The campaign launched Union-PSCE at Charlotte, began the renovation of a
historic library building into the Allen and Jeannette Early Center for
Christian Education and Worship, endowed seven professorships in Richmond
and Charlotte, boosted faculty support in additional areas, provided
scholarships for students, and supported important programs like the
Asian American Ministry and Mission Center and Project Burning Bush.
There were more than 2,000 new donors to Union-PSCE over the period of
the One in Mission campaign.

Prayer
|
|

|
|
"It was an answer to prayer." How often have you heard
someone say that or how often have you said that yourself? When prayer is
answered, does it mean that the person got exactly what they asked for?
Did they put in a request much like putting money in a vending machine
and out comes the desired result? Is that what prayer is to you? -
Seeking out God when you need something, when you're in pain, when you
are at a crossroads in your life. Do you feel that your prayer is
unanswered if the results are not what you really want?
Thoughts on prayer are many and varied for different people. These
particular thoughts on prayer come from a sermon preached by Dr. Steve
Mays at Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church. His feeling on "how to
pray" and "answered prayer" is that prayer for us is being
in communication with God. It is not something we do just when we need
something or feel desperate about our life situation, but rather it is a
constant, ongoing way of life. We talk to God always, and we pray for
God's will in every situation - and the answer to our prayer is the grace
of God through the Holy Spirit. If we realize that the Holy Spirit is
God's answer for us, then we will live our lives accepting what comes our
way - being faithful to God through the good and the bad. His grace
allows us to accept the answer no matter what it is, and the Holy Spirit
enables us to persevere.
The Westminster Greenville Church bulletin last week had a nice article
that gave an interpretation for children of the Lord's Prayer taken from
a book by Lois Rock. It simplifies and explains the actual lines of the
Lord's Prayer as follows:
Hallowed be your name:
"The maker of the world loves big, strong things; blustery winds,
crashing waves, towering mountains, and wild, wild creatures that leap
and run. The maker of the world loves tiny things: scurrying insects,
nodding flowers, birds that twitter, and animals that whiffle and sniff.
The maker of the world is greater and wiser than all these things."
Your kingdom come:
"The Maker God is a gentle king inviting people to live in a kingdom
of love."
Your will be done, on earth as in heaven:
"If you love others, you show it in what you do. You let them have
their turn, their chance. You forget your quarrels and become friends
again. You share what you have so everyone can enjoy good things. Then
the love of the Maker God shines through you, and the whole world is a
lovelier place."
Lead us not into temptation:
"One path looks hard. Another path looks easy. Which path will you
take? The one that leads to where you want to go! Sometimes the way of
love seems hard. The way of selfishness and spite seems easy. But the
Maker God, who knows every pathway, will watch each step you take and
help you choose the way of love."
Now and forever. Amen:
"One day the world will grow old. But everything that is love will
be safe with God forever."
Amen.
