2007 Triennium

trienniumThis Tuesday, July 17, nine youth and three adults from Foothills Presbytery will be leaving from Greenville traveling to Purdue University to be a part of the 2007 Presbyterian Youth Triennium. The theme for this year's Triennium is "Hope is in our Midst," and is being held in partnership with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for Project Hope - "Helping Other People Everywhere." One of the activities for the week will be putting together school bags for children in devastated areas.

The first Triennium was held in 1980 at
Indiana University, and this year marks the tenth anniversary of the Triennium, an event held every three years.

Please keep the following people in your prayers as they travel, learn and serve next week at this very special gathering of young people from all over the U.S.: Youth - Chris Bailey, Shelley Reid, and Jen Fuller from Westminster Greenville Church; Allison Holmes from Nazareth Church; Sarah Crandall from First Greer Church; Will Davis and Ryann Kroske from John Knox Church; and Ashton Gibson and Olivia Looney from Fountain Inn Church; Adults - Leigh McManus from John Knox Church; Donna Templeton, presbytery staff for Youth; and Jimmy Hoke - Furman PSA Senior.

Disaster Response Coordinators Meeting

Just a reminder that all people from the presbytery who are serving as Disaster Response Coordinators are invited to a roundtable discussion meeting at the presbytery office at noon on July 10. Others who are interested are encouraged to attend as well. Bring a bag lunch and be prepared to discuss, listen and plan on what churches in our presbytery are doing to prepare for disasters.

Connecting Teachers and Leaders

The Teacher/Leader training event will be held on Saturday, September 8, beginning at 9:00, at John Knox Church. Each week we will highlight classes being offered at this training event to enable you to select the right class for you. Mary Morrison, Associate Presbyter for Education, will be leading a class on "Basics of Reformed Theology." What do we mean by the "Reformed Tradition?" Learn to identify Reformed beliefs in curriculum. What are resources to help enrich your congregation's faith seeking understanding?

JOYS AND CONCERNS

Just Coffee

coffee

Just Coffee is a coffee grower cooperative based in Salvador Urbina, Chiapas Mexico, with facilities in Aqua Prieta, Sonora Mexico and Douglas, Arizona. The Just Coffee organization emerged out of a desire of Christians on both sides of the border to respond positively to the Mexican immigration crisis, addressing one of the root causes of labor migration from Mexico to the U.S. The goal is to provide economic incentives allowing young and old farmers to remain on family land.

Just Coffee markets a pure organic Arabica coffee that is harvested, cleaned and prepared for shipping as green beans from the very southern tip of Mexico in Salvador Urbina Chiapas, to the far northern frontier of Mexico in Agua Prieta, Sonora. In Agua Prieta the coffee is roasted, ground, and packaged in small, air- tight bags for crossing over into Douglas, Arizona, and shipped to customers in the U.S.

Just Coffee sells several different varieties of coffee - Arabica, Robusta and an Arabica/Robusta mix, both offered in regular and dark roast. They also have Decaf and Unroasted Beans. The roasted coffee sells for $8 per pound and the unroasted beans are $4 per pound.

Several churches in Foothills Presbytery are actively involved in promoting Just Coffee and offer it for sale to their congregations. Also, Chuy Gallegos, presbytery pastor for Hispanic Congregational Development, supplies the presbytery office with bags of coffee to be purchased in the office.
