Foothills Presbytery Stated Meeting Held
at Camp Buc
|
|

|
|
Elected commissioners,
ministers, and visitors, and presbytery and camp staff gathered in the mountains
of Sapphire, N.C. on Tuesday, August 21, for a summer presbytery meeting.
Business was conducted in the casual camp setting, and a barbecue lunch
was served family style in the new dining hall. Attendees had an
opportunity to see the new high ropes course and the new bathhouse and
dock at the lake.
Two candidates for
ministry, two ordained ministers, and one candidate for Commissioned Lay
Pastor were introduced to the body, and each spoke about his/her faith
journey. Rachel Anderson and Dottie Metropol, candidates for ministry,
were examined and approved for ordination to continue in their work at
Tamassee DAR School and Spartanburg Campus Ministry respectively. The
Rev. Richard Caldwell was approved to be the interim pastor at the Seneca
Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Tim Holland was approved to serve as a
pastoral counselor in Spartanburg. Elder Mike Turner (First Spartanburg)
was examined and approved to serve as a Lay Pastor at the Unity
Presbyterian Church.
Inquirers Clark Remsburg
and John Lattimore were examined and approved to move to the Candidacy
stage of preparation for ministry. The Rev. Mark Adams, pictured above
with Executive Presbyter George Wilkes, spoke on Mission Challenge '07
and welcomed invitations to speak at churches in the presbytery during
October.
Changes in the Presbytery
office staff structure were presented and approved, as was the 2008
budget. Bill Lancaster will become Associate for New Church Development,
and Mary Morrison will change from part-time to full-time employee. A
short presentation was given on the importance of having a "Safe
Place" policy in the church, and those in attendance were asked to
signify if they have a "Safe Place" policy or if they are
working on this important issue. Camille Gaffron from Villa International
also spoke briefly about the work at Villa. The Mission Team distributed
materials for each church so that a Hunger Program can be implemented.
This program will involve the giving of 2 cents per meal to help alleviate
hunger in the area.
An overture from the
Walhalla church was presented by the Unity Team of the Ministry of
Governing Body. After discussion, the overture was referred back to the
committee. A report on the Outdoor Ministries program was given by Tandy
Taylor and gratitude was expressed to Jonathan Sherrod, who is leaving
his position as outdoor ministries director. The meeting adjourned around
3:30.
